20 Most Unbelievable WWE Moments From 2016
11. Divas No More
For years, WWE divided its talent into two separate categories: males were "superstars" and females were "divas". The company even went so far as to replace the Women's Championship with the Divas Championship after the two titles were merged in 2010.
In keeping with the "divas" branding in 2013, WWE announced a new reality show that would be broadcast on the E! Network called "Total Divas". The show would follow the lives of several WWE divas both in and out of the ring.
The early 2000s may have glorified the term "diva" with female pop singers' celebrity status like Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, and Madonna, but the word would take on a more negative connotation before long. As is the case with most of pop culture topics, WWE was slow to the punch on this one as the company not only continued to call their women wrestlers "divas", but they coined the evolution of the division the "Divas Revolution".
With a stronger emphasis on wrestling abilities than there had been in years, the Divas division was finally dropped at WrestleMania 32. WWE replaced the Divas Championship with the Women's Championship and finally decided that all talents, man or woman, were worthy of the title "WWE Superstar". The term "diva" was essentially dropped with the exception of E!'s "Total Divas".
