Professional wrestling is obsessed with constantly going one step further, with taking past ideas and reshaping to them to be bigger, more shocking and more intense. WWE had the steel cage match, but when this didn't prove ominous enough the Hell in a Cell was created. When Hell in a Cell stopped popping the crowds, the Elimination Chamber was conceived.

Introduced as the brainchild of Eric Bischoff, the Chamber was treated with total fear by all the competitors at the time. It was an amalgamation of a whole host of gimmick matches, including the cage matches mentioned above as well as WCW's War Games match. Add all of the impressive statistics (16ft high, 36ft in diameter, 2miles of chain etc) and you've got yourself a pop.

Eric Bischoff was running RAW at the time, and when he announced the first Elimination Chamber match for the 2002 Survivor Series. Triple H would be the defending champion, going up against Shawn Michaels, Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho, Booker T and Kane. Michaels would come out on top, and the match is still alive today.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
