17. Gangrel

A blood-drinking vampire, the character of Gangrel had modest success in the WWF during the 'Attitude Era'. For years, David Heath had worked a similar gimmick away from the company. Known as the 'Vampire Warrior', the man honed his character and worked briefly under different guises for both WCW and ECW. In 1998, he was given the call by Vince Russo to work the persona in the WWF. Emerging amidst a ring of fire, Gangrel was bathed in red light. His haunting entrance music was menacing, and he carried with him a goblet full of blood. As if this wasn't creepy enough, the wrestler would perch on the ring steps and take a drink of the substance, before spitting it all over fans around ringside. Naturally, people recoiled, even though they knew the liquid wasn't actually plasma. Gangrel was huge in the development of stars such as Edge and Christian. Forming 'The Brood', the vampire gimmick served the trio well. One of the most spooky aspects of the character was the 'Blood Bath' stunt he'd perform. The lights would darken, and ghostly breathing would play over the PA. When the house lights came back up, a rival was dripping in blood. It was quite the striking visual, and just one reason why Gangrel was so effectively freaky.
