20 Things We Need To See From Lucha Underground Season 2
16. Meaningful Representation
Two of my favorite characters from season one were Mascarita Sagrada and Pimpinela Escarlata, two men that wouldn't exactly be booked positively on any other televised American wrestling show. As if to drive the point home, they even briefly formed a tríos team with Sexy Star, LU's flagship character for progressive portrayals of the marginalized. Unfortunately, they were both beaten badly as part of Dario Cueto's vendetta against Sexy and basically vanished from the show.
Yeah, they showed up at the tail end to team with Bengala, but here's the thing: there was no development. In their first matches, the narrative was that their opponents were underestimating them because they were not Real Men, but those opponents were defeated, and their attitudes should have been as well. Part of being a progressive show is allowing your characters to progress past being sideshows and become meaningful characters in their own right.
