20 Things You Learn Watching WWE Since 1997
2. The McMahons Are Always The Stars
When Vince McMahon screwed Bret Hart out of the WWE Championship in 1997, the circumstances of the dirty deal were no secret. As a result, McMahon became the most hated man in wrestling, and he rode that wave to become one of the most successful heels ever. After years of WCW buying out his talent, he had finally found the one superstar who could never be poached.
Unfortunately, it seems that McMahon - and the rest of his family - got quite the taste for stardom. Over the next year, his children Shane and Stephanie became regular characters on programming, and Triple H would soon marry into the company. Now, 17 years after WrestleMania 2000 boasted "A McMahon in every corner," WWE's ruling family still doesn't know when to step away.
It might not be so bad if it weren't for the fact that the McMahons insist on putting themselves over at the expense of active talent. Vince spent years chewing out employees who were too afraid to stand up to him, and now Stephanie does the same. As for Shane, he was booked to stand toe-to-toe with The Undertaker at WrestleMania, and was originally penciled in to take on Brock Lesnar at this year's show.
