Although Punk didn't seem happy to be a part of the WWE roster by 2012, he still had one huge accolade to his name: his 434-day WWE Championship reign. It seemed like no one could take down The Second City Saint, as he had defeated the biggest names in the business. In the meantime, The Rock and John Cena had been working hard to shape up their WrestleMania 29 match, a battle that was a year in the making. WWE wanted to make the match an even bigger draw and decided to toss some gold into the equation. The Rock and Punk's feud seemed a little transparent then, even if both delivered some incredible quips on the mic. At the 2013 Royal Rumble, The Rock and Punk squared off with the WWE Championship on the line. Unsurprisingly, Rock took the title so that he could defend it against Cena at WrestleMania. Punk was left with nothing except having been a stepping stone on the way to a match being touted as one of the most crucial in pro wrestling history.
