Shane Douglas is best known as ECW’s “Franchise,” and the man who kickstarted the Extreme movement by tossing the NWA Title to the floor and effectively raising a middle finger to what he decreed a “dead” company. His ECW run was highly successful, but his spell as WWE’s Dean Douglas was a disaster from start to finish.

It didn’t help that Douglas failed to impress in his few televised WWE matches, but he was saddled with a rotten gimmick. He was a college dean who featured in a series of vignettes lecturing fans and wrestlers alike, and often carried a paddle (the “Board of Education”) to the ring.

His whole run lasted just a few months, but Douglas briefly became WWE Intercontinental Champion at In Your House 4. Dean was set to challenge Shawn Michaels for the belt, but when HBK was forced to pull out through injury, and his title was forfeited. Unfortunately for Douglas, he was made to immediately defend the belt against Razor Ramon, and he was soundly defeated.
