20 WTF WCW Moments

14. Goldberg Beats Hollywood Hogan

One of the first truly positive moments on this list comes in the form of Bill Goldberg. By mid-1998, Goldberg had exploded into the role of one of the most popular babyfaces in all of WCW. Fans had been force fed a diet of nWo domination, but it was reasoned that big Bill could be the one to level the playing field and stand up for the WCW brand. On an episode of Monday Nitro in July, '98, that's exactly what happened. In front of a massive crowd at the Georgia Dome, WCW's hottest new sensation bagged the World Title by beating Hollywood Hogan. As a consequence, fans went crazy. Goldberg had been undefeated in the lead-up to the match, and he was on fire at the top of the industry. Now, due to his victory over Hogan, he had the belt to prove it. Since the occasion, industry critics and fans alike have wondered exactly why WCW didn't host the match on a Pay-Per-View. The reason was simple, Eric Bischoff wanted to beat the WWF's Raw in the ratings that week. Despite the business circumstances surrounding it, this was a massive moment in WCW history.
