20 WWE Retirements That Meant Absolutely Nothing

4. CM Punk (2011)

In June 2011, CM Punk said that his contract with the WWE was expiring and he was not renewing, and after his WWE Championship match with John Cena at Money in the Bank, he would leave the company with the WWE Championship. However, anybody who watched Punk in Ring of Honor knew how this storyline would turn out. Back in ROH in 2005, Punk won the belt and had already €œleft the company,€ only he€™d show up on shows and end up defending the belt each night in unannounced matches. That storyline lasted a couple months, as Ring of Honor only had one show every few weeks. In WWE, amazingly, Punk€™s hiatus only lasted two weeks, as he €œre-signed€ with the WWE on the second Monday Night Raw after Money in the Bank, complete with new entrance music. Punk has stated in interviews that he really re-signed with the WWE on the night of his championship win, but that€™s tough to buy. Anyway, if WWE held out on Punk€™s return for a little bit longer, they would have some seriously captivating television. Alas, they pulled the trigger too soon.
