The Royal Rumble concept may have been "unbelievable for television", but it nevertheless did not headline the inaugural edition of the show, a USA Network special from Ontario's Copps Coliseum in 1988.

That honour instead fell to the unlikely quartet of The Islanders (Haku and Tama) and The Young Stallions (Paul Roma and Jim Powers), who contested an understandably brisk two-out-of-three falls match for the evening's closer. For the recond, the heels snatched the win.
