Double J Jeff Jarrett was in-and-out of the World Wrestling Federation, having multiple runs with the promotion from 1994 through 1999. When Jarrett returned to the company in late 1997, he went through a variety of gimmick changes before settling back on his Double J character, the country-music singing, world's greatest entertainer, this time lead by Tennessee Lee (aka Col. Robert Parker).

For Jarrett's big SummerSlam program in 1998, he battled D-Generation X's X-Pac in a hair vs. hair match at Madison Square Garden. Jarrett lost the match and his golden blonde locks thanks to the post-match butchering led by Droz and The Headbangers.

Using the loss as a catalyst to shift his character, the next time Jarrett was seen, he was sporting a squared-off crew cut and had ditched the long tights and cowboy hat. Instead, Jarrett wore short tights with a new design and soon joined forces with Debra McMichael. The only tie back to his previous country-music character was the gimmicked acoustic guitar Jeff would carry with him that would usually be used on his opponents' head.

Jarrett would remain with this look throughout the rest of his WWE career.
