19. January - XFL Returns

All those rumours circulating during the previous month that Vince McMahon had his eyes set on throwing a huge sack of cash on a bonfire proved accurate, when on 25 January, his new subsidiary Alpha Entertainment officially announced the revival of failed football league the XFL.

The original XFL, launched in 2001, folded after just a single season, slashing $35 million off the personal finances of McMahon. The very suggestion the league would ever be revived was up there on the improbability scale with Kim Jong-un winning The Great British Bake Off - perhaps even higher (we hear he does a mean bulgogi).

Even with over $100 million of company stock set aside for the project, the XFL's comeback stood as an emblem for WWE's considerably heightened financial muscle throughout 2018. If it fails - perhaps when it fails - it'll barely make a dent in the company coffers this time around. It's a strange world we now live in.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
