22 Greatest WWE Champion vs. Champion Matches Ever
18. John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio - Raw 2013
Okay, I’ll stop with the lineage-vendetta now—time for a non-title entry.
This particular instance came from Monday Night Raw in July of 2013, when WWE Champion John Cena stepped into the ring with World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio.
Unlike the aforementioned Triple H vs. Shelton Benjamin match though, this wasn’t a contest designed to enhance a mid-card talent. This match was booked to give viewers their money’s worth and improve the overall show.
And truth be told, it did just that. Cena and Del Rio had over 15 minutes to show the world why they were champions, and they delivered a match of pay-per-view quality. Once again though, the result was overshadowed by outside interference—number one contenders Mark Henry and Dolph Ziggler both played a part before Cena hit the AA to reinforce his dominance.
