In late 2005, Jericho decided to take a hiatus from professional wrestling in order to tour with his rock band Fozzy and pursue an acting career. Jericho had been wrestling for well over 10 years and needed to rest and recuperate from years on the road.

In 2007, cryptic videos began appearing on WWE television featuring Matrix-like binary code that interrupted WWE broadcasts and were featured on the website. The announcers had no idea what to make of the videos as most of the code seemed like nonsense until messages began appearing within the raining letters. There were also Biblical references to the city of Jericho and soon fans caught on.

"Save Us Y2J" became a popular sign at WWE events and, in November 2007, Jericho finally made his return to WWE following a 2 year hiatus and announced his plans to save fans of the WWE by winning the world title.

The crowd reaction to Jericho's return was tremendous and Jericho became one of those performers who would receive a hero's welcome no matter what year it was.
