When Batista turned heel at the end of 2009, he immediately adopted a new persona - he became a shallow, vain narcissist, concerned only with his own success. That made him a natural foil for John Cena, from whom he had been largely removed for his entire WWE career. When Cena captured the WWE Title at Elimination Chamber 2010, Batista immediately beat him for the belt in an impromptu match. The following month at WrestleMania XXVI, Cena reclaimed the title, but a rematch was imminent.

At Extreme Rules, Cena and Batista met in a Last Man Standing match, and the result was a brawl filled with finishing moves and weaponry. Cena hit an Attitude Adjustment early on, but Batista got to his feet after nine. Batista whipped Cena through the guardrail for a nine count of his own, but Cena followed up with an AA through the announcers' table. Batista barely beat the count, then came back with a spinebuster and a Batista Bomb for another nine count. Cena locked in the STF, then released it, keeping Batista down for nine one final time. When "The Animal" got to his feet, Cena pulled him into the corner and duct-taped his legs around the ringpost, finally keeping the challenger down for a ten count and ending a war.
