When John Cena defeated Jeff Hardy on Raw and earned a shot at WWE Champion Triple H, the stage was set for a WrestleMania XXII rematch. Just as Triple H wanted to prove that he was as good as Cena, the younger competitor needed to show the world that his win wasn't a fluke.

Early in the match, Triple H countered a Five Knuckle Shuffle with a spinebuster, but Cena soon threw HHH out of the ring, injuring the champion's leg. Cena continued to work the leg, eventually applying an STFU, but HHH escaped the hold. Cena tried to follow up with an FU, but Triple H turned it into a Pedigree. He was unable to make the cover due to his hurt leg, and Cena soon followed up with an FU. Triple H kicked out of the cover and hit another Pedigree to score the win, ending one of the best matches of 2008.
