16. Will Ospreay And Kenny Omega Make Friends

You simply must embrace wrestling’s incredibly dumb and yet endearing logic to get anything out of it.

Kenny Omega tortured Will Ospreay in the media for over a year before their seminal match on January 4, 2023. Omega, playing the role of a jealous, defensive athlete who knew that he was being overtaken, said that Ospreay was an acclaim-farming pretender who was too mentally fragile to ever reach his level. The tactic worked; Ospreay broke down at the press conference, revealing the toll that grief and isolation had on him. Across their two matches, the expected athletic exhilaration was grounded by disturbing, blood-soaked violence. The action verged on the horrific. It was awesome, in a “painful to even watch” way.

They made friends two years later on Dynamite, within five minutes, bonded by climbing up a girder and launching a breathtaking pair of unhinged moonsaults from a ridiculous height.

They’d found a common enemy in Don Callis, and had in actuality come to realise that they’d each been manipulated into becoming the worst versions of themselves - but it’s still funny that a demented stunt brought them together symbolically. They gave each other brain damage, they hated each other that much.

The preceding brawl was sensational, too. Omega has a knack for structuring such a chaotic scene - it’s the closest he has come to harnessing his powers in the context of episodic wrestling television - and there are few things cooler in that medium than two phenomenal babyfaces coming together to banish evil.
