25. Harley Cameron Gets Serious

Harley Cameron got over in a big way at the turn of 2025.

Her “live show charisma” almost certainly helped, but Cameron charmed audiences through her unhinged commitment to the bit. She played a weird, off-kilter character, and seemed to disappear entirely into a role that often crosses the line into unbearable cringe. Cameron, in contrast, was a delight. Clearly talented, her vast improvement demonstrated that she was worthy of your support and belief.

In a spot of region-specific booking, she was chosen to challenge for Mercedes Mone’s TBS title at Grand Slam Australia. The idea was to build the match around one great hope spot (in truth, they only just about got there).

The actual promotion of the match was spectacular. Cameron, with an assist from her puppet, performed in a music video in which she talked trash to Mercedes. She expressed doubt that she could win, finding a unique way of putting over her opponent, before yelling cut. The scene then transitioned to an intimate, traditional sit-down promo. This was great; Cameron, doing well not to humble-brag, said that she has an ability to learn things quickly: rapping, ventriloquism, wrestling. But as gifted as she was, Mercedes was a specialist, a legend in her own time, and defeating her was the most difficult ambition of her fledgling career.

The timing was great. Getting serious when she did added gravity to what otherwise was a fun, low-stakes build. Cameron added much-needed depth to the act here, too. She felt human - ridiculously talented in many areas, but human.

When booking a beloved underdog babyface to go against an invincible heel, a booker should, in the best-case scenario, make it feel like the unhappy ending is an injustice. It was too early for Mone to lose - we wouldn’t have experienced the All In: Texas magic if she did - but Khan and Cameron achieved precisely that.
