25 Best Wrestling PPVs Ever
18. WCW/AAA When Worlds Collide
Best Match: El Hijo Del Santo & Octagon Vs. Eddy Guerrero & Art Barr
Worst Match: N/A
The Wrestling Observer ***** effort pitting El Hijo Del Santo & Octagon against Eddy Guerrero & Art Barr is completely warranted in its undying praise.
Set against a backdrop of genuine, emotional, cacophonous heat, it is a masterpiece of American wrestling fused seamlessly with awe-inspiring lucha libre, in which the best of both styles is showcased. The stunning aerials and dives are not employed arbitrarily, but rather woven into the fabric of the match just when the colossal heat generated by the heel Gringos Locos heel team of Guerrero and Barr is cut off at its apex.
That the best sequence of the match - a Doomsday Frankensteiner followed by Barr's best ever Frog Splash - arrives so early into it is a testament of its immaculate pacing.
Their heat-seeking tactics (Art Barr in particular is loathed by the raucous and partisan crowd) are stupendous. They, adorned in US-flag patterned tights, pretend to swim, insulting the Mexican fans by insinuating that they'd have to illegally cross the border to reach their apparent promised land.
Far from a one match card, When Worlds Collide features four other matches ranging from worthy to excellent - the young Rey Misterio, Jr. is frighteningly quick, demonstrating winning chemistry in his exchanges with Psicosis, with whom he'd put Cruiserweight wrestling on the mainstream map in WCW.
