Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar spent much of 2003 feuding, regardless of who was the babyface and who was the heel. Angle returned from a neck injury as a fan favorite, but after he won the WWE Championship from Lesnar in a triple threat match at Vengeance, Lesnar turned on him and sided with Vince McMahon. A one-on-one match was made for SummerSlam.

Brock was frustrated by Angle early on, but when he tried to head to the back, the WWE Champion brought him to the ring and unleashed an assault. Angle tried to capitalize with an Ankle Lock, but when Lesnar broke the hold, he accidentally knocked out the referee. This brought out McMahon, who hit Angle with a chair.

Lesnar managed to hit Angle with an F5, but when he tried for a second, Angle grabbed an Ankle Lock. Lesnar made it to the ropes, but Angle pulled him back and, with the referee recovered, Lesnar's submission was registered.
