Jeff Hardy's World Heavyweight Championship win at Extreme Rules immediately became a crushing defeat when CM Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to win the title. In the subsequent months, Punk began to espouse his straight-edge lifestyle to an obnoxious level, taking pot-shots at Hardy and his history with addiction. Hardy reclaimed the title at Night of Champions, but he would put it -- and his career -- on the line in a ladder match at SummerSlam.

Punk took an early advantage when he dropped Hardy on a chair, but after the action spilled to the outside and the challenger hit a dive, Hardy retaliated with a chairshot of his own. Hardy laid Punk on a table and tried to dive onto him, but the Straight-Edge Superstar moved. He tried to climb the ladder, but Hardy stopped him and climbed it himself.

Punk had to tip the ladder, and he followed up with a superplex onto it. Hardy countered a GTS and threw Punk through a table, but Punk still managed to stop him from climbing the ladder. Hardy laid Punk out on the announcers' table, climbed a huge ladder, and nailed Punk with a Swanton Bomb, but Hardy seemed to get the worst of it.

They fought back up the ladder, and Punk was able to knock Hardy off and claim the title.
