25 Greatest WWE WrestleMania Matches Ever

7. The Rock Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (WrestleMania X-Seven)

For my money, The Rock has never had a better match. While the first battle with Cena was pretty good, that was largely just the spamming of finishers and finisher reversals (the sequel made it more blatant). With Austin, he and Rock built layer after layer on the foundation of competitive fire, and steely-focused alpha male-ism that would drive two protagonists toward busting each other open without a blink.

The ending may be infamous, with Austin's ill-devised heel turn cooling off an unstoppable WWE product, but the shocking juxtaposition in the moment doesn't harm the well-crafted match - in fact, it strangely enhances it. The only other long-term shame is that most people remember the astonishing finish more than the tireless work that went into getting to that point.
