16. Shane Douglas And The Birth Of Extreme
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kpEjrKqf3s By now, everyone knows the story of ECW being the "little company that could" for several years before they were done in by financial problems. It all began with one promo in 1994, back when the company was known as Eastern Championship Wrestling and were affiliated with the NWA. After Shane Douglas won the NWA-ECW Heavyweight Title, he threw the belt on the ground, proclaiming the NWA to be a dead organization. He became the new ECW World Heavyweight Champion, and the company officially became Extreme Championship Wrestling. The promo was strong and full of passion. It painted the picture of ECW not wanting to be associated with what they felt was the past and instead wanted to look to the future. It got everyone talking about a company and a title change that they otherwise would not have cared much about. Douglas became the first "poster boy" for Paul Heyman's promotion and he helped to set the tone for what was to come.
