He had been a face for nearly 15 years, which meant full generations of wrestling fans had never seen him as a "bad guy", especially since it happened before the age of the internet. The entire thing was surreal but it really began to hit people during Hogan's post-match promo. As the fans began to pelt the ring with garbage, Hogan talked about how the fans basically turned their backs on him and how upset he was about it after years of telling them to do the right thing. There was such anger and hostility in his voice and it was something so shocking to listen to. Any doubts that fans had about whether or not WCW was making the right move by turning Hogan heel were eliminated by the end of the promo.
