25 'WWE Superstars' Matches That Were Actually Awesome

9. John Cena vs. Ted DiBiase (May 28, 2009)

Almost all of the biggest names in WWE in the last five years have appeared on 'WWE Superstars' at one point or another, including John Cena. Isn't it odd that the guy that appeared in the show's intro for several years would make all of one appearance on the program? He is the poster child of the company after all. Regardless, Cena was still finding his footing in the ring after being put through a spotlight on the stage by Big Show at Backlash one month prior and DiBiase smelled blood in the water. He was out to make a name for himself against the mutli-time WWE champion and wasn't looking to take it easy on the injured Cena whatsoever. At this point in time, DiBiase was being branded as nothing more than a tag team competitor, having spent the last year in the tag division with Cody Rhodes. With that in mind, DiBiase was determined to use this match as a launching pad for himself as a singles star. Perhaps WWE officials were interested in how the former World Tag Team champion would fare against Cena considering how high they were on the idea of pushing him as a babyface at some point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvLWL6AzS9E Either way, DiBiase had a strong enough showing against Cena that he certainly proved he had a future on his own when The Legacy ran its course. It was also encouraging to see Cena contest a back-and-forth bout against an young up-and-comer instead of putting him away with ease.
