3 Ups & 3 Downs From Last Night's WWE NXT (Apr 4)
2. Getting Things Done
Though Drake Maverick has rightly won all kinds of plaudits for his game-changing impact on 205 Live, William Regal is the absolute best kayfabe authority figure in recent WWE history, and last night demonstrated why.
Big Bad Bill was heavily involved early on. When Adam Cole and Kyle O'Reilly ruined the Dusty Classic, he was quick to act. Not only did he call the duo out on their bulls***, but he noted their cunning in forcing a double DQ. Regal was one step ahead, though: he knew the Undisputed Era were trying to avoid defending the NXT Tag Titles at TakeOver, so as punishment, he booked them against both teams.
Cole complained later in the evening, lambasting the General Manager for forcing him to compete twice on the same show. Instead of folding, Regal gave him three options: work both matches, pull out of the North American Title ladder match, or let O'Reilly defend the Tag Titles alone.
Fantastic stuff all-round from WWE's most fair, just, and level-headed boss. Not only is Regal not a prick (unlike most of his counterparts), but he actually punishes bad guys for doing bad things, and never feels like he's abusing his power. If only WWE had booked the McMahons and Triple H like this over the past couple of decades...
