3 Ups And 4 Downs From Last Night’s WWE NXT (July 8)
2. Up - Effective Backstage Segments
Wow, that really seems like damning with faint praise, and perhaps it is, but there just weren't that many positives to take away from last night's show. The fact that backstage interview segments were all used effectively just about makes the list.
Jason Jordan and Chad Gable cemented their towel-based partnership, Jordan finally accepting Gable as a tag partner for next week. The segment was the usual mix of funny and subtle (perhaps intentional) homo-erotica.
Bayley, normally a bit too soft and nice in her interviews, showed glimmers of the intensity and aggression she'll need to make her gimmick sell on the main roster, by declaring that Emma has some pain coming her way.
Even Solomon Crowe did a reasonable job of trying to get people interested for his match with an unhinged promo, though it's hard not to see it as too little, too late.
However, the cream of the crop were the fallout backstage segments from Beast in the East. Fans got to see Owens lunge at a man holding a camera for daring to approach him after his title loss, and new champ Finn Balor received congratulations from Cesaro, Neville and John Cena. The Demon Prince then gave a humble interview about being happy that he won the belt (makes sense) and, even though Balor is still a shade too introverted on the mic, he came across as being as likeable as the recent documentary 'Who Is Finn Balor' painted him.
