Many felt that the boat had sailed on AJ Styles arriving in WWE, let alone winning the WWE World Championship. Even when Styles finally arrived people felt that a world title run was unfortunately beyond him, and after a few excellent matches with Roman Reigns with the title the middle of the card beckoned.

Except the script wasn't quite so closely followed. Styles turned heel by attacking John Cena, and after defeating the Face That Runs The Place at SummerSlam Styles was next in line for a World Championship match against then-champion Dean Ambrose.

At Backlash 2016, AJ Styles defeated Dean Ambrose to become WWE World Champion. If ever there was an image fans felt they truly would never see, AJ Styles holding the famous belt aloft was it.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
