31 Years Of WWE SummerSlam Mistakes

25. SummerSlam '93 - Luger's Heroic Count-out

In 1993, with Hulk Hogan having sped off into the Hollywood sunset to become the biggest icon in cinema history, WWF needed a new hero. The super-popular, hard-working everyman Bret Hart was the logical choice. But he just wasn't muscly enough. And crucially, he wasn't American enough.

No doubt had Bret been born in the heart of Texas and not Canada's 'Cowtown', he'd have had the stars and stripes thrust into his hand and a tour bus refurbished to suit. Instead, the honour went to the naturally unlikable Lex Luger, the Narcissist redirecting his ardour away from himself and onto America.

Obviously, he needed some dreadful foreigner to put in his place, and WWF already had the ready-made bogeyman in the suitably fat, not-white Yokozuna (an American, but never mind). A victory for Luger over the 'Japanese' ne'er-do-well at SummerSlam, and the nation would have a new hero to salute.

And win he did - in the most cowardly manner possible. Like all would-be heroes, the 'Total Package' smashed his naughty-in-name-only opponent with an evil steel forearm, causing the supposed Sumo to succumb to a count-out.

Patriotic balloons rained from the rafters in scenes that'd bewilder Bill Clinton, as the cheat was raised aloft in celebration. Sans the title he'd failed to win. Catch me as I swoon.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
