4 Ups & 1 Down From Ultima Lucha - Night 3

2. The Main Event

Rey Mysterio Prince Puma Ultima Lucha Dos
El Rey Network

Rey Mysterio delivered his best televised match in probably a decade in the main event of Ultima Lucha Dos. Going into the match, I wasn’t super excited, as the storyline between them only began a couple weeks ago. It didn’t quite seem fitting to close out the season, but the story they told in the ring, along with the great action, made it one of the best matches so far in the company’s two years history.

It was the legend nearing retirement taking on the next big thing. Mysterio wanted to prove that he wasn't ready to give up his lucha crown yet. This was a time when Vampiro’s commentary actually helped out the match, as he equated Rey to an aging boxer, who due to years of injuries, needed to be careful in picking his spot. The two put on a lengthy match that stole the show with high-flying moves, insane reversals and an incredible crowd reaction.

The ending saw Puma’s pride and failure to act as his downfall. It was a bit like HBK vs. Flair at Mania 24, except it would have been like Flair taking advantage of Michaels’ “I love you moment” by punching him in the balls as he attempted Sweet Chin Music, just like the good old days.

Rey walked out on top, but the ending also gave us the possibility of a rematch. Puma could come back and say next time he won't take it easy on the legend. He's out to avenge his loss.

It was great storytelling, with the dream match delivering in spades and ending the season on a high note.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
