4 Ups & 5 Downs From WWE SmackDown (13 June - Results & Review)

SmackDown loads up on star power and WWE suffers Fatal-4-Way burnout.

John Cena R-Truth Ron Killings

Bug-eyed and lawless Ron Killings is working a treat for WWE. The company might still be referring to him as R-Truth on commentary, on match graphics etc, but there's an edge to the sudden comeback king that must be prolonged. Fingers crossed Triple H has the sense to make next week's bout with John Cena more competitive than their match at Saturday Night's Main Event was last month.

Cena was the undoubted MVP of this week's show. 'Big Match John' became 'Big Promo John' by delivering not one but two standout speeches that sold him as a champion pinned down by multiple challengers who are hungry to shut his mouth. That includes Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton (again), LA Knight and CM Punk.

SmackDown went Fatal-4-Way crazy as first round matches in both the King and Queen Of The Ring tournaments took centre stage before the Night Of Champions PLE. That dominated 90% of the in-ring time on Friday, but there was some serious over-saturation with the match type by the end of the night. You'd have to really like the formulaic nature of these things to enjoy absolutely everything across every single one of them, but at least the finishes were mostly creative and fed into ongoing storylines elsewhere.

Unfortunately, key characters like The Wyatt Sicks, Jacob Fatu and Naomi all suffered from spotty writing that didn't do any of them any favours. It's cool if creative want to spin things out (they've got a lot of TV time to fill), but some of the booking felt counterproductive or lacklustre.

Here's all the good and bad from SmackDown.
