Regardless of whether fans love or hate the latest iteration of Saturday Night’s Main Event, one thing is certain: WWE has found a formula that serves its purpose well.

The latest offering on Saturday night arrived with five matches that varied from pretty good to outright bad, but they managed to include a couple of major developments and talking points, ensuring that the show was certainly newsworthy (unlike the 2006 revival, which was forgettable).

SNME saw the return of Bronson Reed, who made a splash with his shocking first appearance since Survivor Series when he suffered a gruesome injury leaping from the top of the WarGames cage. Reed would then surprise everyone with his alignment, which puts him right into the main event spotlight on Raw.

The network special also served as a platform for the return of WWE’s unquestioned captain, Cody Rhodes, who finally made his way back to the company to seek retribution on John Cena and to set up a significant tag match for the upcoming Money in the Bank PLE. Cody’s return also raises questions about his role in the world title picture in the coming months, but that will play out soon enough.

The show featured some truly dismal moments as well, with Cena offering up possibly the worst, most stilted promo he’s given in years. Jey Uso had another disappointing title defense. And Zelina Vega was sent out there to die on camera once again.

Saturday Night’s Main Event also offered some pretty basic wrestling, with nothing elevating to a level that will make any fans’ “best of” list for the year, or maybe even half-year. But much like the original SNME, this program provided a lot of empty calories with some pizzazz sprinkled in.

Let’s get to it…
