4 Ups & 5 Downs From WWE WrestleMania 39 Night 2 (Review)

3. Confining The Silly Drama

Finn Balor Edge

After the video package and theatrical entrances, it’s understandable if you were worried that Edge and Finn Balor’s Hell in a Cell match would be an over-the-top dramatic affair that would take itself too seriously.

Edge and Balor spent the lead-up to their Mania match talking about demons and devils, which left you thinking they were going to go crazy with imagery or props. But once the bell rang, the only thing that was out of the ordinary was the presence of a lot of red and purple weapons.

Demon Balor wrestled like pain didn’t affect him, while Edge kept doing callbacks to his offense from much earlier in his career to get an advantage. The pacing was really well done with this match, as the tension felt very real without dragging (aside from the medical visit after Finn got busted open). Finn’s dive off the cell (from a platform obviously there specifically for that spot) through a table was an obvious high point, but there were several really nice moments without it feeling cheesy or gratuitous.

The violence between the two built as they used more plunder to beat on each other, finally culminating with Edge delivering a conchairto to end their feud. Really solid match in a series of them this weekend.
