In theory, your world champion should be the top star on your show, a main attraction who appears to garner interest from fans.
Babyface champ Seth Rollins showed up Monday night to bask in his Money in the Bank world title defense, but he got sidelined by the Brock Lesnar/Cody Rhodes scuffle, then was interrupted by the Judgment Day. From there, Rollins gloated about not having a match before being goaded into a singles bout with Dominik Mysterio in about 15 seconds.
It was an uncanny situation, with a world champ bragging about having the night off and then being drawn into a fight with literally one line from Rhea Ripley, setting up an impromptu match. WWE was clearly going for the “babyface champion doesn’t back down from a challenge,” but this came across all wrong, with a champion boasting about not wrestling and being dragged into a match with negligible conflict.
Impromptu matches on their own should get “downs,” but this was pretty lame.
