4 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE Saturday Night's Main Event (12 July - Results & Review)
3. Rolling On
For the past few years, WWE has spent a considerable amount of time convincing fans that Logan Paul is a top wrestler, a world title contender. And then Saturday night, they asked fans to buy the notion that Paul could be dropped by a single punch from a large musician.
Following on the SmackDown before Saturday Night’s Main Event, country music star Jelly Roll accompanied Randy Orton, while Logan seconded Drew McIntyre. Both men became involved on the outside, arguing with each other and shoving one another, with the singer pushing Paul to the ground before McIntyre started daring Jelly Roll to get in the ring. From there, Orton pinned McIntyre, Logan attacked Orton, Jelly saved Orton, Jelly blocked a Logan punch and delivered one of his own. But then, McIntyre hit Roll with a Claymore while he was checking on Randy.
Yep, Jelly Roll floored Logan Paul, who battled for the World Heavyweight Championship just a couple of months ago. He later demanded retribution, which led to SmackDown GM Nick Aldis booking a tag match for SummerSlam, pitting Jelly Roll and McIntyre against Orton and Paul, indicating that Logan will be asked to match up against a rather big dude who has never really shown any physical prowess in his previous WWE appearances.
On one hand, you have to give credit to any celebrity willing to insert themselves into the program. But then you’re asking fans to accept that someone who looks like they belong nowhere near a wrestling ring is supposed to team with a 14-time world champion to take on a former world champion and a former United States Champion.
Mr. T, this is not. Maybe Jelly Roll has a hidden life as a wrestling prodigy in high school, but otherwise, this is a celebrity playing dress-up and WWE going along against any kind of common sense to build up its brand and book a match for one of its biggest shows of the year… an ultimately meaningless tag match.
Plus, it’s not like Jelly Roll is some household name and major celebrity who is going to have a Helen of Troy effect on business.
