Styles, Ambrose and Cena might have been competing for the sport’s most treasured prize, but no match had higher stakes than The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler last night. This was so much more than a straightforward Intercontinental Title contest, and after being goaded into putting his career on the line a few weeks ago, No Mercy may well have been Dolph’s last WWE appearance.

Ziggler’s victory was one of No Mercy’s biggest highlights, but it’s a gigantic blow for The Miz. The never-ending title reign ends at a shade over six months, and while he and Maryse again resorted to trotting out the Spirit Squad to finish the Show-Off, Ziggler threw it back in his face, and blasted him with a Superkick for the victory. Game, set, match.

Miz has spent over a month running Ziggler’s reputation into the ground, portraying him as WWE’s ultimate loser, and effectively burying everything he’s ever accomplished. Dolph has stood up for himself, but The Miz had the opportunity to prove that he was dead on with everything he’s been saying, and in losing, he becomes everything he’d accused Ziggler of.

It’s a shame to see Miz’s reign end at this stage, but perhaps it was inevitable as soon as WWE slapped the convoluted “loser leaves town” stipulation on their match. His recent performances have been fantastic, both inside the ring and out, and he deserves to remain in a prominent position over the coming months. Still, you need only look at Miz’s despondent reaction to understand how devastating this loss is.
