3. Naito Turns Heel

But wasn't he already a heel?

True, the leader of Los Ingobernables de Japon is one of wrestling's premier antagonists. But for all his disrespect and give-no-f*cks attitude, Naito is more beloved by the fans than anyone else on the roster. The sheer number of LIJ shirts alone testifies to his popularity.

That's why his bout with Tanahashi brought some unexpected developments. Naito's greatest foe the past few months has been his very own IWGP Intercontinental Championship, consistently trying to destroy the belt. Hurling it into the ring proved to be a stride too far, as The ACE assaulted Naito before the belt had rung.

Normally the Japanese audience hate this kind of outside-the-rules behaviour, but they applauded Tanahashi, as though they would've done the same given the chance. From there, Naito was in full heel mode, spitting, slapping, and doing everything he could to show his disdain for his opponent and the crowd.

It's rare that heel-work can come full circle like this: a heel gets so popular with the crowd, they must go above and beyond to bring back the boos.

It appears Naito is just that good at being bad.
