5 Most Star-Studded WWE Royal Rumbles Ever
2. 2011
2011 marked the first (and, to date, only) year that the Royal Rumble has featured 40 entrants as opposed to the normal 30, and while quantity should not be conflated with genuine star quality, this was also one of the more impressive line-ups WWE have ever put together.
In total, there were 11 former world champions among them: CM Punk, Khali, Booker T, John Cena, Jack Swagger, Sheamus, Rey Mysterio, Kevin Nash, Big Show, Randy Orton and Kane. While this is a slightly misleading impression of how star-studded the match was - WWE had been playing hot potato with the belt around this time, and many of these names were flash-in-the-pain champs, while Booker and Nash were long past their best - it was still much more stacked than usual.
Alberto Del Rio of all people emerged victorious, and despite having the required numbers, WWE haven't revisited the 40-man format since. It's a nice idea on paper, but doesn't necessarily lend itself to high quality wrestling.
