5 Ups & 3 Downs From WWE SmackDown (21 Feb - Results & Review)
4. SmackDown’s Tag Division Is Clicking
DIY and Pretty Deadly could've gone out there and wrestled an acceptable 15-20 minute TV match that ended with Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa picking up a routine win. Sure, they could've done that, but WWE decided to do something much, much, much more interesting. There's just so much to like about where the blue brand's tag-team ranks are right now generally.
The Street Profits are coming across as almost APA-esque brutes who have everyone's number and know it. Meanwhile, DIY are running for their lives from the chasing pack, Motor City Machine Guns feel they're due another shot due to what Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins did at the Rumble, and then there's Pretty Deadly's bizarre potential as a spitfire babyface duo.
Did anybody see that coming when calendars turned to 2025? Anyone?!
PD have been showing some much needed aggression during recent matches and segments. That continued here vs. Gargano and Ciampa before all of the run-ins. On commentary, Barrett and Joe Tess wondered aloud whether or not Deadly might've beaten DIY had Ford and Dawkins not cut them off at the knees. That, dear readers, is simple storytelling done well.
It's pretty obvious there's a multi-team match coming at WrestleMania 41. Good, 'cause there should be. There, it'd be lovely to see either The Profits go full-blown heel and reign supreme as champs (it looked like they were heading for a heartbreaking WWE split at one stage!) or Pretty Deadly get some flowers for their hard work as punching bags for the division previously.
At least these teams all have some purpose behind showing up for SmackDown every week. That's progress.
