5 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Dynamite (27 April)
3. Serena Slays Shida, Moves On Up
Hikaru Shida and Serena Deeb's fifth AEW battle could have perhaps benefitted from greater babyface intensity, as there were moments where Shida's comebacks felt a little soft. While Deeb tortured her in submissions and holds, Hikaru battled back often with mere whispers of violence, her strikes occasionally lacking gusto when they needed them most.
Other than this, the match was great. Building on their longstanding, match-to-match story of Deeb going after Shida's knee, having injured it several times in the past, it worked best when 'The Professor' was picking the former Women's World Champion to pieces. Serena continually went after the joint, creating great drama worked around the Street Fight stipulation, which meant the ropes could only be used for leverage rather than complete safety.
Shida fought bravely, coming close with an avalanche Falcon Arrow and numerous kendo stick barrages, though she was eventually felled after kicking out of a Deebtox onto a chair. The Serenity Lock sealed the deal with Deeb who, with Thunder Rosa watching on, will presumably be the next Women's Title challenger.
A sharp and satisfying end to a feud that suffered through the wrestlers going missing for weeks on end, but ultimately reached the right conclusion.
