5 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Dynamite (April 17 - Results & Review)
1. Main Event RULES
Will Ospreay Vs. Claudio Castagnoli was - by the finish - a fantastic "banger".
They probably have an even better match in them, and another barely passable gate didn't help the lack of big fight feel, but this was awesome when it peaked. It took the form of a shoot-out, as expected. Claudio did attempt to focus his attack on Ospreay's ribs, but this beat mostly dissolved under the wave of back-and-forth action packed in the second half of the match. It was almost as good as you'd have expected, had you set your expectations sky-high.
In one of several incredible feats of power and agility, Ospreay used his core strength to sit up when trapped in Claudio's swing and rock him with a spinning DDT. Ospreay's hurricanrana reversal from the Ricola bomb was astonishing as well. Ospreay has worked better white-knuckle, how-is-this-even-physically-possible matches - but this was still a cracking time. It's easy to lose perspective. There were at least three moments in this match in which it was impossible to comprehend the supernatural execution.
In the post-match, the Family and the BCC brawled as Ospreay expressed rage and disbelief at the conduct of his stable. How does he not know what they're about at this point?
AEW has done a pretty wonky job of booking Will as a babyface and adhering to storyline continuity at the same time. A big tidy-up operation must be performed after Dynasty. The character dynamics are shot. Contrast is pivotal in money-drawing personal issues.
AEW lost sight of that ages ago.
