5 Ups & 4 Downs From WWE SmackDown (20 June - Results & Review)
3. Babyface Charlotte Flair Is Too Forced
No female babyface feels more forced than Charlotte Flair, admittedly. The question needs to be asked: Why is Triple H content to let Charlotte wrestle as a babyface again?! She got booed for playing the hero here against a clear heel in Chelsea Green. Even the Secret Her-vice using the numbers game didn’t put sympathy on Flair.
You'd think WWE would've learned their lesson long before now. Charlotte just isn't likeable as a character (she's said so herself many moons ago on Steve Austin's 'Broken Skull Sessions'!), and no amount of heroic in-ring comebacks will ever change that. There might come a day when she gets John Cena'd and people start to appreciate what she brings to the table retrospectively, but that's a while away yet. For now, all fans see is someone who tramples over practically everyone in her path en route to countless hollow title wins.
Being fair, it does look like the writers fancy going in a different direction with Flair. Her simmering story with Alexa Bliss is evidence of that, and it's hardly like Charlotte wanted to gobble Green alive here. She just...needs to quit battling against organic fan reactions to her work. WWE needed to wake up and smell the coffee on that years ago. Hell, even the run up to her WrestleMania 41 bout vs. Tiffany Stratton gave plenty of fair warning that Flair doesn't work as a baby.
It's cringeworthy to see her pose after hitting a comeback spot, then smile a knowing smile as fans rain down boos on her for it. Hey Hunter, stop fighting a losing battle and just let her be the heel she was born to be.
