5 Ups & 5 Downs For WWE Raw (4 Aug - Results & Review)

WWE follows mediocre SummerSlam with mediocre Raw with average wrestling. And more Brock worship.

After a mediocre SummerSlam that ended on an incredibly sour note, discerning fans would be forgiven if they weren’t exactly champing at the bit for Monday Night Raw.

After dominating the talk of the wrestling world (for various, mostly controversial, reasons) for 24 hours, Brock Lesnar was not present on Raw, but that didn’t stop WWE from crowing about how viral they went delivering the dopamine hit to fans when the Beast returned after a two-year hiatus due in large part to being named in a sex trafficking suit against the company and its former chairman.

But even brushing that aside, Raw was far from a strong show Monday night. The highs were muted, with the best stuff coming via two table-setting segments: a post-main event brawl, and an in-ring promo between two women over a midcard title. Beyond that, the positives were minor and/or conditional.

The downsides, however, were apparent nearly every time the bell rang. The wrestling on this show just wasn’t that good. Some of it was perfectly passable, but if WWE is going to hold itself up as the biggest and best sports entertainment company in the world, then they should be producing the most entertaining action week in and week out. Opening Raw with a long, mediocre talking segment also doesn’t help matters.
