5 Ups & 5 Downs From WWE SmackDown (Oct 8)
3. Toni Storm’s One-Note Presentation
WWE are big fans of paper-thin presentation when they're trying to re-introduce acts to a wider audience. That's why Toni Storm, who was a sensation on NXT UK and popular on NXT, is being trumpeted as a "wild child of the 80s". It's also why Michael Cole cannot stop spinning that yarn about her mother's mixtape collection.
This is so one-note that Pat McAfee went into business for himself and ripped the living p*ss out of Toni's flimsy characterisation. McAfee put on a deadpan voice and read out phoney facts like, “Toni Storm loves rock n’ roll so much she once used drumsticks to eat sushi” and, “Toni Storm once wore all-denim to a party”.
You know it's bad when the commentators are being smart-arses.
SmackDown's writers can't rely on some "wild child" chat to see them through, and Storm is far too talented between the ropes to be masked by some crummy Van Hammer knock off gimmick. They'll need more than this, and soon.
