5 Ups & 8 Downs From Last Night's WWE Raw (June 7)

Downs…

8. Eva Marie Is Gonna Be A Heroine?

Look, until we see this in practice, the theoretical booking of Eva Marie as an unironic babyface might be the wackiest booking we’ve seen in a while for a returning star. It would be like booking Ricky Steamboat as a heel, Ultimate Warrior as a coward, or John Cena as a quitter.

Eva Marie was reviled by fans. Her last iteration before she left several years ago was pitch-perfect: she was ironically promising to be this improved wrestler who was going to wow us with her return, but her matches kept getting sidelined by weird accidents (wardrobe malfunctions and the like).

But Monday’s vignette was straightforward, saying she was going to practice what she preached, and going to show us what she’s made of. Everything has been about inspiring people and giving it her all.

And hey, that’s an admirable and honest thing, and she should be commended in real life for that. But as a wrestling character, promoting someone who was never a fan favorite (outside of a drooling Corey Graves) is just a really strange move.

Change this writer’s mind WWE. We’ll see what happens next week.
