1. Old School Champs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIC-LfteeJI The perfect example of how to build a tag team from jobbers to champions, convincingly, in the space of a few short months, the rise of Dawson & Wilder climaxed last night with their dominant victory over the Vaudevillains. It was in this match that NXT's aforementioned attention to detail really shone, as Dawson & Wilder made the most out of their throwback gimmick with some of the best, old-school heel work of recent years. It just goes to show: the more attention that's paid to wrestling fundamentals, the more creative D&W can be in flaunting those rules. In fact, they exploited rules that some fans might no even know are rules in order to gain unfair advantages. A beautiful little sequence saw Wilder trapped by english in a wrist-lock. To reach his partner, Dawson let go of the tagrope to make the tag. The ref was then distracted by telling Dawson that the tag was invalid, allowing Wilder to grab a handful of hair and escape the hold. That's very old-school, and clearly D&W relish the comparisons to Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard. The two technicians worked English's leg throughout the match, and rounded off that narrative perfectly by forcing a leg-based submission rather than going for their more crowd-popping finish, the Shatter Machine. Even if Dawson and Wilder prove only to be transitional champions until the return of Enzo and Cass, the pure wrestling methodology they used to win the belts should be heralded as truly remarkable.
