5 Ups And 6 Downs From WWE Raw (June 8)
Ups...
5. Lean Into It
What do you do when all the hype surrounding a match involving a man who’s been retired for nearly a decade – save for two matches – calls an upcoming PPV bout the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever”?
You lean into it.
Christian wasted no time in using the match moniker for the upcoming Edge/Randy Orton contest, telling his best friend that he didn’t think Edge could pull that off in his prime, let alone now. Edge acknowledged that, asking if Christian knows what it feels like to have those expectations heaped up onto you. He used a perfect analogy: being at the base of a mountain with no equipment and being told to scale it.
Of course, that didn’t stop the announcers from hyping the match ad nauseum as the “Greatest Wrestling Match Ever,” but at least there was a hat tip toward the fact that this is ridiculous hype for this kind of match.
Still, make no mistake that while this gets an “up” here, the branding for this match is objectively stupid. The positive marks are because WWE seemingly acknowledged it by leaning into how impossible it is to live up to that expectation.
