5 Ups And 7 Downs From WWE Backlash 2020
4. Historical Comparisons
Andre the Giant versus Hulk Hogan. Randy Savage versus Ricky Steamboat. John Cena versus The Rock. Shawn Michaels versus Steve Austin. Undertaker versus Triple H. Edge versus Randy Orton.
One of these things is not like the other.
Yet, that’s how Backlash opened, as WWE continued to go all-in on promoting the Edge/Orton match as the Greatest Wrestling Match Ever, a moniker that even the participants were seemingly mocking on social media during the past week.
The simple truth is that the two have met in several one-on-one matches throughout the years, and while some have been pretty good, it’s not like this is a rivalry where both men have freaky chemistry or have such a sterling reputation in the ring – both are very good, but are not the greatest in-ring technicians – that this billing even remotely works.
We could have let this go, but comparing Edge/Orton to all those legendary rivalries is just ridiculous. Let them go out there and have a good, maybe even really good wrestling match and leave it at that. You’re just setting them up for failure, and now you’ve put unfair comparisons in people’s minds to make it even worse.
