Knowing that Monday was a holiday – and one that has a massive draw to pull fans away from television in the form of fireworks – WWE could either try to pull fans back in with a really strong show or just phone it in. We got our answer just seconds into Raw Monday night.

Raw opened with the Golden Truth rapping some nonsensical patriotic song while wrestlers dined at a backstage cookout. Naturally, this gathering quickly devolved into the trademark WWE food fight, with everyone assaulting each other with condiments, desserts and other food. It was exactly what you’d expect from WWE in terms of lowbrow, predictable “humor,” with the segment deserving one big eyeroll and little more.

If you were wondering, you quickly learned that WWE was clearly going to phone in Raw and not even really try. These food fights are a staple of taped Smackdowns on Thanksgiving or another holiday, generally when nothing of note happens.

It’ll be interesting to see if Raw’s ratings dropped off quickly after the show opened, just to punctuate that point.
