Sometimes WWE has gotten it wrong when it comes to giving us a star we can get behind. In the summer of 1993, Lex Luger was instantly pushed into the limelight as a red, white, and blue babyface after working as a narcissistic heel just three weeks earlier. The momentum was huge and the stage was set for a world title coronation at SummerSlam. However, Vince McMahon wanted a bigger return on his new investment and held off on Lugers planned title win until WrestleMania 10. Seven months proved to be too long to wait as Luger displayed a lack of diversity as an in-ring performer, and his character showed nothing beyond stars and stripes. It also didnt help that Luger had Bret Hart nipping at his heels as the wrestler that people wanted to rally behind and who was already positioned as the champion nine months earlier. WWEs marquee transition was in flux as they went from Hogan to Hart, back to Hogan and then on to Luger. Once the "Total Package" was in plain sight, it became evident that plan B, the Hitman, was the way to go. The same scenario is being played out today as Roman Reigns currently has Daniel Bryan as a professional antagonist of sorts. Odds are that the creative goal of their upcoming match at WWE Fastlane is to make Reigns look good in a winning effort since he lacks that standout performance as a singles wrestler. If that doesn't work and WWE pushes Reigns anyway, it could be a slow exit from the main event scene with a return trip never materializing.
